Rana Mitter, Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II 1937-1945 (2013).

Mitter’s highly readable account of China’s crucial contribution to the anti-fascist struggle explains so much: why that Chinese effort was needed, what it cost, and why it was then discounted in the West.  One need not be a “fan” of China, but only a dispassionate, fair-minded observer, to see that continued ignorance on this topic can only create continued misunderstanding of China’s place in the world order, then and now.
